AUCTION RULES
FOR 4-H & FFA
COMBINED MARKET CLASSES
**Changes from prior year highlighted in red below**
To be eligible to participate as an exhibitor in the Market Classes and be eligible to sell your animal at the Marion County Junior Livestock Auction (MCJLA), exhibitors must be in good standing with 4-H and FFA Rules and Regulations. Exhibitors are no longer eligible to participate in MCJLA Market Classes and Auction after the year of their High School Graduation. (Example: A Youth graduating in May of 2024 is still eligible to participate in MCJLA Market Classes and Auction in July of 2024)
ALL MARKET ANIMAL EXHIBITORS MUST:
a. Own their animals. Ownership responsibility does not transfer until time of release.
b. Pre-register by one Exhibitor’s name on a primary animal and Family name on backup animal(s) at required livestock Initial Weigh- In dates for Beef, Sheep, Goats and Swine.
c. Not register animals which have been previously sold through a Market Sale connected with a fair or livestock show. These market animals are not eligible for exhibition or sale.
PRE-REGISTRATION AND INITIAL WEIGH-IN REQUIREMENTS
a. Livestock Initial Weigh-in Days are:
Beef - 1st Saturday of February running from 8 – 10 AM
Sheep, Goats & Swine – 1st Wednesday and Thursday of May from 4-7 pm.
b. All Beef, Sheep, Goats and Swine MUST be weighed at the Initial Weigh-In.
c. Sheep and Goats must be tagged with a USDA Scrapie ID tag at Initial Weigh-In. Scrapie premise number and animal ID must be written on registration form.
d. Country of Origin (Cool) forms are no longer required.
e. All animals must meet the following weight requirements at initial weigh in:
g. Rabbits and Poultry will be tagged and weighed on Final Weigh-In at the Marion County Fair.
h. Castration of Lambs, Goats and Hogs must be initiated before Initial Weigh-in and they must be fully castrated and healed prior to Final Weigh-In. Beef must be fully castrated and healed by the Initial Weigh-In. Castration means that the testicles are severed completely from the body. Un-castrated, stag or short-sacked animals will not be tagged. If an animal is suspected of not being fully castrated at the Fair Weigh-in/Market Show the Auction Committee reserves the right to remove the animal from the Market Show and Sale. If there is a dispute the owner of the animal can hire, at their expense a veterinarian to confirm proper castration was completed.
i. There will be a $5.00 registration fee charge per animal which is payable at the time of Initial Weigh-In for Steers, Lambs, Swine and Goats. Rabbits, Poultry and Turkeys will have a $5.00 registration fee for each lot payable at the Final Weigh-In.
j. Absent or altered tags will disqualify animals from the sale. If your animal should lose the ear tag provided at the tagging day, contact your 4-H Leader or FFA Advisor immediately. Contact of an MCJLA Director or Officer must be made within 72 hours of loss. If you have the tag that came out of the ear, please hold on to it until assessment is made. Livestock Auction representatives will assess the cause of the loss. The animal will be re-tagged ONLY if the tag was lost due to an accident. This determination will be made at the sole discretion of the MCJLA and the determination shall be final.
k. Each 4-H/FFA Family will be allowed to weigh-in Family back-up animal(s), as long as each individual 4-H and FFA member has weighed-in a primary animal that has been designated to an individual 4-H/FFA member at the Initial Weigh-In. The back-up animal MUST be designated to an individual Exhibitor within the family at the Final Weigh-In to be allowed to show and sell.
l. Exhibitors/family must be able to unload & load their own animals at weigh in. The Auction Committee members will not be unloading and loading your animals. If animals are brought in the back of a truck or high trailer you must be able to lift them out and back in yourself. If you are not able to, you should consider bringing a ramp for loading and unloading your animals. Youth should be present to get their animals on the scale.
ANIMAL QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS
a. All sale animals must be shown by their owners unless excused by the MCJLA.
b. All animals that are tagged as market animals and meet the requirements of these rules must show in a market class.
c. Steers weighing 1451 lbs. to 1500 lbs. will be auctioned at 1450 lbs. to the buyers; members will be paid for 1450 lbs. Hogs weighing 286 lbs. to 300 lbs. will be auctioned at 285 lbs. to buyers; members will be paid for 285 lbs.
d. Only animals that meet the requirements for each species will be accepted into the market animal classes. In order to qualify for the auction, the following live evaluation and weight requirements must be met:
FINAL WEIGH-IN REQUIREMENTS
a. Exhibitors may weigh-in and show up to two animals (or pens of small stock) per species.
b. Exhibitors MUST turn in completed Market Animal Health Record for each animal at Final Weigh-In (except for Poultry, Rabbits & Turkeys).
c. Market Steers must turn in completed transportation slips and e-slip/brand inspection slips.
d. Market animals will be weighed on Wednesday, of fair week at times specified in the 4-H/FFA Fair Schedule.
e. Rabbits must have a permanent tattoo in the left ear. The tattoo will be provided at the fair at no additional cost.
f. Poultry, Rabbits & Turkeys must complete a registration form, be tagged and pay $5 for each lot.
g. The weights at the Final Weigh-in will constitute sale weight. If an animal’s weight is in question, the animal will be taken off the scales, the scales will be re-balanced, and the animal will be re-weighed immediately. That weight will stand.
h. Animals must be dry when crossing scales.
i. Market Poultry and Turkeys must provide a receipt of purchase to Poultry Superintendent(s) no later than final weigh in on Wednesday of fair to sell through the auction.
EXHIBITOR REQUIREMENTS
a. Exhibitors may only sell ONE animal at the Marion County Junior Livestock Auction.
b. Exhibitors are REQUIRED and responsible for getting their pictures taken on Thursday at the conclusion of their species market show.(Friday by noon for Poultry and Turkey exhibitors) The picture will be put on the Buyer’s placard. One picture per animal. Pictures of the Champion animals may be taken with the buyers during the auction. These pictures will be used for MCJLA promotional materials and on the MCJLA website.
c. Exhibitors showing multiple market animals, either of one species or of multiple species, MUST sell the highest placed market animal. Exhibitors with multiple animals placing EXACTLY the same, either of one species or of multiple species, MUST declare which animal they want to sell by the end of their last market show. Declaration must be made to the Auction Committee's Sale Manager. (example of EXACTLY: 4th place Blue Market Hog in their class and 4th place Blue Market Beef in their class)
d. Exhibitor must sell the Market Champion or Market Reserve Champion and may not select a lower placing species. If the exhibitor has two species scoring equally as Champion or Reserve Champion, the exhibitor may select which one they will be selling at the Livestock Auction.
f. Exhibitors must show in Showmanship class for each species entered as a market animal at the fair (the animal shown in showmanship does not need to be the market animal). Market animals will not be sold at the Marion County Junior Livestock Auction if Showmanship is not done for each species entered.
g. All hardship case exceptions and grievances will be handled through the MCJLA Grievance Procedures.
ANIMAL HEALTH REQUIREMENTS
a. A completed Market Health Form is REQUIRED and must be completed prior to entry into the Fair for review by the Veterinarian. The completed Health Form MUST be turned in at the Final Weigh-in.
b. Any Market Animal that is dismissed from the Fair for any reason prior to the auction will not be sold at the auction and Exhibitors are not allowed to substitute animals.
DRUG TESTING
The MCJLA reserves the right to draw blood for drug testing on any species qualifying for the market classes. If a market animal tests positive, the exhibitor will forfeit participation in the Marion County Jr. Livestock Auction for the next year.
BUY BACK - We no longer allow 4-H or FFA members to buy back their animals.
SALE ORDER & ROTATION
a. The sale order will be determined by the MCJLA and posted (with ear tag numbers) before the final draft of the sale catalog posted Friday as soon as possible. Any errors should be reported to the Auction Committee's Sale Manager immediately. b. There shall be one Overall Show Champion and one Overall Reserve Show Champion for each species.
c. Sale rotation is: odd years; swine, beef, goats, rabbit, poultry & sheep
even years; sheep, goats, beef, rabbit, poultry & swine
ADD-ON
All exhibitors who meet the requirements of the Initial Weigh-In, perform the Final Weigh-In, and show in their prospective showmanship and market classes are eligible for Add-On funds. Exhibitors may solicit and receive Add-On funds prior to the auction, for their 4-H and FFA Livestock Project, using the MCJLA Add-On form from the mcjla.com website. All Add On funds received by the MCJLA will be disbursed to the exhibitor prior to September 1st. A commission of up to 7% shall be charged for handling of the Add-On.
BRANDING
All large sale animals must be branded with the sale order number on their backs (Rabbits will be tattooed, Poultry and Turkeys will be banded). This number MUST remain on the animal throughout the sale and MUST NOT BE REMOVED until the animal is removed from the Fairgrounds. If the branded sale order number is removed prior to the auction in error, please request a new brand immediately from the MCJLA President. Exhibitors may not enter the sale ring with an animal that does not have the branded sale number. NO Hair and skin products should be used on the backs of animals before or after branding. Excessive water should NOT be used once branding is complete. The branding number must be legible during the auction
AUCTION
Marion County Junior Livestock Auction is a TERMINAL sale.
On your sales receipt, there will be three options for the handling of your purchase.
1) Donate: Marion-Polk Food Share will gratefully accept your donation of any animal you have purchased from a 4-H or FFA member during the auction. Simply indicate your interest to donate on your paperwork. You will pay the MCJLA auction for the entire price of the animal. The Food Share will pay the slaughtering and cutting/wrapping and then distribute the meat to food pantries throughout Mari on and Polk counties.
2) You can resale your animal(s) to the floor buyer for the floor/market price. Your final bill will be the difference between your bid and the floor/market price.
3) You can slaughter your purchased animal(s) with one of the processors listed in the sale years catalog.
Following the Auction
a. Livestock Auction animals sold at the Auction will be loaded out at 11:59 PM Saturday evening. This time is subject to change at the discretion of the MCJLA.
b. Exhibitors are responsible for caring for their sold auction animals up to release time.
c. A maximum of 7% commission fee shall be applied to the sale price and add-on amounts and will be deducted from the exhibitor’s check. The MCJLA will issue the checks prior to September 1st.
d. All checks must be cashed prior to December 31st or the monies will revert to the MCJLA fund.
e. If animals which were sold at the Marion County Junior Livestock Auction are subsequently condemned (at slaughter or packing plant) the seller will not be paid and the buyer of the animal will be fully reimbursed.
GRIEVANCE PROCEDURE:
The MCJLA Directors shall be in charge of all interpretation and the application of these rules. Grievances must be in writing and submitted to the MCJLA President. Prior to the fair, the grievance will be determined at the next regularly scheduled meeting and render a decision. A fair time grievance committee will meet and render a decision within twenty-four hours of receiving the grievance. The fair grievance committee shall consist of a minimum of four Directors. All decisions of the grievance committee shall be final and binding

- Market Goats (Wether or Doe): Blue or red award; minimum weight of 70 lbs. and maximum weight of 110 lbs. at Final Weigh- in.
- Market Rabbits: Pen of three fryers, 4 – 5 ½ lbs. each, under 75 days of age (Blue Awards and Red Awards). Registration for market rabbits will occur on Wednesday night at the Marion County Fair and will have a permanent tattoo in the left ear.
- Market Poultry: Pen of three broiler/fryers, 4+ lbs. and no more than 50 days of age (Blue Awards and Red Awards).
- Market Turkeys: One Hen or Tom between 16 and 18 weeks of age. Hens must weigh at least 13 lbs. and Toms must weigh at least 20 lbs. (Blue Awards and Red awards).
FINAL WEIGH-IN REQUIREMENTS
a. Exhibitors may weigh-in and show up to two animals (or pens of small stock) per species.
